Resetting SMC puts the configuration of all such components to their factory defaults, thus making the non-functioning/unresponsive USB ports work properly. SMC is a chip inside your MacBook Pro that manages the components that require power to function. ■ Reset System Management Controller (SMC) There are two ways you can fix all the problematic USB ports in a single go: However, you could make the argument that having separate devices for your I/O (the dock) and your display makes upgrading components easier in the future. If the USB ports of your MacBook Pro keep malfunctioning, and you’ve already checked and confirmed that the USB device(s) you’re trying to connect are not the culprit, you may need to do something about the USB ports. I think the best option is to get a thunderbolt monitor because you get the cleanness of the one cable, one device solution, but you don't have the transfer speed restriction of USB-C. With USB-C, you run into the same I/O restrictions that I mentioned with my monitor. Thunderbolt is going to give you lots of options, but they tend to be expensive ($300-$400 CAD). You either get a thunderbolt one or a USB-C (3.1) one. One thing to keep in mind is that all 4k USB-C monitors will suffer from the same transfer speed issue because USB-C (3.1, non-thunderbolt) is limited to two USB 2.0 connections when it's outputting 4k 60 Hz. They also can't charge anything and aren't very accessible at the back. The problem for me is that there aren't that many USB-A ports and they are only 2.0, so they're quite slow (you wouldn't want to use it for external storage or transferring files to a USB key, for example).

I really like how clean it is to have everything connected with one cable and I can have my audio interface + mouse/keyboard dongle or whatever connected to the back. Here's why: I bought an LG 27UK850, which is a 4k monitor that has USB-C with power delivery + two USB A 2.0 ports on the back. Just my two cents, but I would go for either a thunderbolt monitor (if you have thunderbolt) or a docking station with cheaper monitor.
